The Old and New Civil War

The Truth About the Civil War

The Civil War of 1860 was not originally over Slavery.  It was over the Morrill Tax, which was a huge tax on the Southerners.  only approximately 6-12% of the people in the South were Slave Owners.  When people were realizing the truth, Lincoln changed the scope of the War to Slavery.  The Government could have ended Slavery peacably by purchasing the Rights to the Slaves, thereby setting them free.  I must remind you that even some Northerners were Slave Owners.  The Government is only interested in reaping Wealth from the hard work of Americans and ensuring an exorbitant lifestyle.

Ron Paul on Slavery

What the South Was Really Fighting For

New Civil War

Time To Wake Up

It's time to wake up.  Foreign Countries in the Overseas news are saying it.  Yet you still slumber as Americans.  What is wrong with you people.  Drinking too much of the polluted water, or on too many Anti-Depressants.  I Sure don't know!  Our Country is falling apart because you are still fighting a Civil War, only this time between Republicans and Democrats whom are dividing the people.  When will you stop bickering over what you don't like about the other person?  Let them live their life the way they want.  You can't live it for them.  They can't live for yours.  Reasonable Regulations - not depriving each other of Rights and Liberties and Property.  Stop falling in and playing their game.  This is  what is destroying our country and they are laughing at us on Capitol Hill.  While we get angry over Gun Rights, Abortion Rights, Marijuana (Hemp) Rights, etc, etc.  They keep fueling the fire on Capitol Hill and you keep falling for it.  Time to stop and regroup.  Time to join forces against these War-Mongers whom are using each of us as pawns.  Time to Fight back and fight back hard.

Other Countries recognize it, Why can't You

There were many factors that contributed to the US Civil War, but slavery was certainly the operative one.

Need to read other books. Slavery was an issue, but not the dominating one. Media and the Government were controlled back then just as they are now. They give you just the information they want you to know, and it isn't always the truth. But I appreciate your comment.

Don't be one of those nuts. There were many factors that contributed, but slavery underscored all of them. It was an issue that festered for near a century and pushed tariffs, regionalism, infrastructure development, economics, technology, expansionism, political equilibrium, etc toward all-but-inevitable conflict.

You are entitled to believe whatever you want. That's what makes this country great. As far as calling me a nut. I served my country for over 20 years. I view many articles including articles from the Annals of Congress. Try my link to Constitution Society page if you want eye openers. This is the problem in this country. Your taught to believe a certain way. Have Blinders on. Everything else is wrong. Need to be diversified in all possible alternative explanations.

Your service to the country is highly admirable and deeply appreciated, but has nothing to do with whatever agenda is driving your 'opinion' of history. I have taught history for over ten years and my eyes are wide open, thanks. I'm sure you're a big enough boy that I don't need to sugar coat it when I say that you sort of come across as one of those conspiracy-swallowing, bunker-building, paranoid "Dey out to git us!" nuts. I suggest a drink, the company of a nice lady, and a nap for some much-needed relaxation.

Apparently, all you have done is try to insult me every chance you can. I have met teachers, Officers in our Military, Federal Workers and others who do not seem to understand what our country is about. I am not saying the government is out to get us. The government is an institution just like our schools are institutions for learning. But you don't learn everything in school or college or in some fancy university. Sometimes you have to educate yourself. Read history. Our Country has indeed changed in just over two hundred years. We have more bigots and imbeciles like you who wouldn't stand up to fight for freedom. Go back to your Teachers desk, and teach your version of events. I have met men and women in uniform, and all over this earth of all different races I would rather communicate with than you. I see Bigotry is still alive and well in our country.

Note: This article isn't to debate whether the Civil War was over Tariffs, Secession, or Slavery. But to place in your minds that with the current two party system, that we are in a perpetual state of War with each other. The Civil War of Old isn't over. It has just taken a different form.

If people would read my other articles, they would see that I am not a racist toward any man or woman. I love my country and Constitution more than I love my life. And for that, I would die for it. Would you?

"But you don't learn everything in school or college or in some fancy university. Sometimes you have to educate yourself. Read history."

???

And...you don't suppose that people "read history" in these schools? Or just not the 'real' history you have 'educated' yourself on? Classic conspiracy delusion.

The US Civil War really is over, and the two party system is in no way comparable. Your constant references to the military advance your arguments (whatever they may actually be) not one bit, despite how admirable military service itself is.

It is apparent that you have formed an opinion of me and only wish to badger me without opening your eyes and reading other writings of people in our history. 127 years ago Lysander Spooner wrote articles on Virtues and Vices, letters to Congressman Bayard of Delaware that shows congress acting under assumed powers just as they do today. The Constitution of the U. S. of A. is a dead letter in this country, because people will not join together. Instead you bash each other around. It appears you are of the controlling crowd. Tour need to control others, regulate them, is what the Two Party System does in this Country. We like Freedom, but we don't want you to have yours. Act my way or the highway. I feel sorry for you. I hope one day you will under5stand what liberty and freedom really mean. I am not in the mood to argue with an individual whom just looks in pick out whatever words he chooses of my text to try and make me look like a basket case.

Here in Ohio, and other States it is a Law that says, when driving, you must wear seat belts. Is the vehicle my property or yours? If mine, you have no right to tell me what to do in my property. You can however, dictate the rules of the road, speed limits, stop lights, etc. Motorcyclists here don't have to wear a seat belt, or helmets. I feel more protected in my car than on a motorcycle. Would you?

tksensei profile image

tksensei 2 years ago

So, the Constitution is dead and 'da gubment be comin' to git ya,' because you have to wear a seatbelt?! Did someone mention "basket case"?

You could have a perfectly good conversation about seatbelt laws without the doomsday rhetoric. Really, you could. In fact, up to the point where you would inevitably cross the Mason-Dixon line of crazy, I would probably be largely in agreement with you.

And yes, I know you served in the military.

Look I am not saying the government is coming to get you. But they are encroaching on areas that they were not meant too. The Government is supposed to be of Limited Powers, not Assumed Powers. The agencies within government perform their duties in large part correctly, but sometimes they even slip up and cross the line. I may not like your opinion, but I respect that you have one. I believe Common Courtesy and respect would be due me also. Which apparently was something that you weren't taught. Respect, Courtesy, Tact, Forbearing, honesty, Courage and honor are all traits of a good American. So what are you doing to protect the United States of America, The Rights and Liberties of your fellow Americans and yourself? It's a fair question. Create an article and prove me wrong!

Your penchant for the dramatic won't bring back the Articles of Confederation. There always has been and always will be a degree of struggle between federal and state/local/personal power. You got a beef, take it up with Madison, then pour through a century plus of court decisions clarifying and interpreting the law, but for the love of Pete, hit 'pause' on the continual loop of Braveheart you've got playing in the background!

milleredkarla profile image

milleredkarla Hub Author 2 years ago

First off, I am not looking for the Articles of Confederation to return. I am looking at our agents of government adhering to the Constitution and Bill of Rights. And have them stop interfering in my life or anyone else. It wasn't Madison's fault. He presented the Bill of Rights to Congress. They twisted everything around.

Some things he presented were never placed in the Bill of Rights. The Anti-Federalist's and people had just gone through Tyranny with Britian. They were fearful that this new Government could do the same. And they were right in their beliefs. Two States refused to join the union and some Congressman thought a Bill of Rights and Limited Powers to the Government might entice them to join. But for over two hundred years, Bankers, Big Business and Greed overturned many Rights and Liberties or at least made them to mean nothing at all. Thomas Jefferson, stated, The Bill of Rights and Constitution were made so that men of ordinary understanding could understand what it meant. But then Lawyers and Judges and Politicians decided to interpret the various clauses and Amendments and say it doesn't mean what it says. The Ninth Amendment in the Bill of Rights isn't even recognized anymore. The Constitution was created to limit powers and delegate certain powers, Not, for Government to interpret it. There are those who will tell you it's a living document and must change as the time changes.

Supreme Court Judge Antonin Scalia stated, "I think the very terminology suggests where we have arrived — at the point of selecting people to write a constitution, rather than people to give us the fair meaning of one that has been democratically adopted. And when that happens, when the Senate interrogates nominees to the Supreme Court, or to the lower courts — you know, “Judge so-and-so, do you think there is a right to this in the Constitution? You don’t? Well, my constituents think there ought to be, and I’m not going to appoint to the court someone who is not going to find that” — when we are in that mode, you realize, we have rendered the Constitution useless, because the Constitution will mean what the majority wants it to mean. The senators are representing the majority, and they will be selecting justices who will devise a constitution that the majority wants. And that, of course, deprives the Constitution of its principle utility. The Bill of Rights is devised to protect you and me against, who do you think? The majority. My most important function on the Supreme Court is to tell the majority to take a walk. And the notion that the justices ought to be selected because of the positions that they will take, that are favored by the majority, is a recipe for destruction of what we have had for 200 years.

To come back to the beginning, this is new — 50 years old or so — the Living Constitution stuff. We have not yet seen what the end of the road is. I think we are beginning to see. And what it is should really be troublesome to Americans who care about a Constitution that can provide protections against majoritarian rule"

That is EXACTLY what the judiciary is there to do.

I guess the above comments by our Supreme Court Judge Scalia above doesn't mean diddly to you. In his text he says it is to protect the minority from the majority. And he goes on to say, "he'll tell them to take a walk." Gee, I guess even the Supreme Court Justice thinks somewhat along the same lines as I do. Guess he's a nut-case or conspiracy wacko also? Why don't you write him a letter and tell him so. You can even tell him about me and my conspiracy wackiness. I wouldn't mind if he made a few comments on my page. At least with him it would be educational.

"The Anti-Federalist's and people had just gone through Tyranny with Britian. They were fearful that this new Government could do the same. And they were right in their beliefs."

And they had tried a structure of government that gave virtually NO authority to the federal government and saw that it did not work. That's why they aimed to strike a more workable balance with the Constitution.

It's not my opinion that the US has endured under our current Constitution for 222 years. We are the wealthiest, most powerful, free and secure nation the earth has ever known, and if your 'opinion' doesn't recognize that you need to "wake up," "open your eyes," or whatever other dramatic phrase you like to throw around pointlessly.

I gave you the definition of free and freedom on my other page. apparently you refuse to recognize what the word free really means. Don't give me your bull crap that we're free. We're only as free as the government and the Tyranny of the Majority want us to be. You came into this world with Free Will and a human mind to decide what your life was to be like, your pursuit of happiness. Only problem is you and others like you want to dictate what my freedom and pursuit of happiness is to be. Go look in a mirror and tell yourself your free. Because government and society says your free, doesn't really mean you are free. As far as wealthiest nation goes, I guess you don't pay attention to the economic trouble this country is in. How many Trillons are we in debt. How much do we owe China and other Countries investing in our sinking Federal Reserve Dollar. How many of our children, grandchildren, great grandchildren are going to be paying for this debt. Ever since we went off the Gold Standard, government keeps borrowing money like theres no tomorrow. Instead of reducing the size of government or reducing spending, they spend more or increase their size costing us more economic woes. Yes, we are powerful. We have Huge quantities in our Nuclear Arsenals to wipe the planet clean of all mankind. That's just great. We have a military that's smaller than China who can devlop a billion man army fairly quickly. We use that power for Corporations to make Big Profits off of War, or resources not belonging to our Country. War has and will always be about Religion, Resources, and Money. We use other topics to mask the true meaning of War. The Iraq War should have never happened. We had a no-fly zone and Patriot Missile Launchers in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait Set up after Desert Storm in 1991. We had restrictions in place on what they may purchase as far as materials. This Country under Bush used WMD's and the line that Bush said, "He threatened to kill my Daddy." Wow, let's go kill every Leader around the World for whatever statement they make. This is about Geographical Politics and corporate wealth as usual.

I don't need to open my eyes, they are already. Have been for a long time. It's you who lives in a fantasy. You still haven't ever answered my question, "Have you ever been in the military, or are you just some College weanie, who avoided it?

I'm sure anyone else coming to my pages will want to know. I sure do! Even our military personnel are waking up and finding out what I say is true. Because I'm not the only one saying it. Even Newscasters have been saying it for many years now. Only most are so afraid of losing their jobs, they "Don't want to create waves." Better to sit back, do nothing, it will work itself out. That's Bull. So you keep sitting infront of your computer putting out the propaganda for your Tyrannical Majority and Government. The rest of us know the truth.

Absolute nonsense. The entire population of China is now 1.3 billion. Do you envision an 'army' of children and old women? More pointless hyperbole. China's military isn't yet anywhere near ours. I would have expected you to be more informed about such things.

Didn't put it out so that we can have a general debate. As far as moving out of the country goes. I served to defend it for 20 plus years. I earned my right to challenge it. I asked you one question above and you refuse to answer it. "Have you ever been in the military, or are you just some College weanie, who avoided it? Or are you a coward who hides behind words? It doesn'r seem to matter anymore. Not many people paying attention anymore. Even those whom say they are fighting for Liberty at some group meetings I attend, make me just shake my head in frustration. Apparently, World War II and the Genocide that took place didn't matter either. Only matters if it happens closer to home! Thanks for the Comment. I have decided not to write anymore on hubpages. I defended freedom for nothing.
